Oregon Option Gone

Three weeks on my back. Wired up and not feeling great. Have had a couple of procedures. Had an angiogram and then a stent shoved up inside me after 3 hours on my back while I was awake. I was black and blue.

They are planning on sticking some sort of balloon inside my artery/vein to blow it up. As a Fatherโ€™s Day celebration! 50/50 chance it will work. If it does, they will fatten me up for another operation a few months later. If it doesn’t work, I don’t need the Oregon Option.

Never expected to have a heart attack. I was keeping the option open for cancer. Messed that up! And Iโ€™ve got no option of getting that back so I have to put up with what I am putting up with. Itโ€™s hard yakka. But I am doing what I am told because I have got no other option. Iโ€™m getting pretty good care.

My daughter Sarah is doing this for me. Hopefully I will get to see your comments but I wont be able to reply just yet.

If you want to ask anything contact Sarah: suzziqqt@hotmail.comthumbnail_IMG_2810

  1. Aha, there you are, my curmudgeon friend, even though it was via a proxy writer. You (and your family and puppy) have been through the mill these past few weeks, for sure. Csrolyn let some if us know that you were lolling around in a hospital, so we were all waiting for further news.

Here’s hoping the balloon option will do the trick for you, M’Lord.

Okay, I give up. What is an Oregon option? Google was all zipped lip on that, aside from some waffle about politics and gridiron plays.

Guess I will go down to the train station and see who gets off the train today. ๐Ÿ™‚

Take care, sunshine. Don’t do anything I would do. Mwah. โค

    1. Hi Yvonne, I suspect the Oregon Option is m’Lord’s code for dying with dignity. He had a plan to come to the University of Wollongong, which is just down the road from me. . . . horizontally. Perhaps the universe is conspiring against the “best laid plans of mice and men.”

Energy is never created or destroyed….so RC Cat of the Realm has demanded, uh, sorry, incorrect vocabulary….instructed The Molly and Staff/me to fling some warmth, caring, and friendship into the sky your way, Brian. RC says as dunderheaded as we are, it may bounce off Coco, but she is sure it will settle comfortably around you. (Don’t tell her we saw, but RC Cat quietly shooed as soft cheek pat, too.๐Ÿ™€ She knows Coco will allow this small token..friends of fur during difficult times.)
Lord Bear, please give Sarah you WordPress login and pass word to hold. Your written tales are too precious and too fine to fade (who knows what internet/clouds and technology will morph to) – She and Poppy and all the other generation yet to be dreamed of will treasure your stories – please tell them to print out posts and put in a binder. Never a finer journal written and shared.

    1. FYI, according to WordPress, the blog will remain as long as the owner doesn’t erase it. The only thing that might happen is that if no one pays for the domain name, it will go from “lordbeariofbow.com” to “wordpress.lordbeariofbow.com” and some of the formatting might change if premium fonts or themes are used.

However, all the content will remain.

But for the family, those stories should be captured – we have journals from before 1750 and there’s no better way to discover and really understand history and the times than from the words of an ordinary person. He’s lived quite a life…not to mention he’s quite a writer. The littles won’t hear him tell the tales, but they can read them later and smile. Those are a treasure

  43. Sarah reached out and asked we do an update of Brian’s current condition.ย

Despite the initial optimism once Brian was home, his condition deteriorated and after nine days he asked to me moved to a inpatient palliative care unit where he is right now.ย

They administered a cognitive test to determined if he’s capable of making informed decisions and he passed with flying colors a cognitive.

(Personal Note: I think that is not all good news since someone with a sharp mind would find the situation very frustrating.)

He’s no longer eating and mostly sleeps all day but they do read the e-mails and comments that are left on the blog to him and they always bring a smile and are appreciated. Still, he has no quality of life and wishes only to pass peacefully.

Sarah mentioned there would be no more updates before he passes as watching someone slip away is very difficult.ย  She may, in time, put an announcement on the blog if she can still access it.ย

  49. Well, Pardner, gathered the herd and pondering the sunset are you?
(Darn inconsiderate when so many of us had planned to intercept and visit with you first if you actually traveled to Oregon.)
Have to say, you’re a fine lad (we never age in our own head, right?) and a skilled teller of tales and adventures. Thanks for your insights, conversations, and humor.
The world will shimmer and giggle with less brilliance without you.
May peace and comfort wrap softly around you and yours.

  50. I’m at a bit of a loss for words here, and that doesn’t happen often. You’ve been a bright light, a twinkling smile for all of us, dear Brian. Wishing you fair seas and a following wind.

  51. Many thanks to Sarah, (and Carolyn and Emilio) for keeping us up to date. Brian and I shared notes as my brother battled the same disease, surgery and treatment within months of each other. Brian had many helpful suggestions for him, and his doggedness and spirit always shone through. My brother passed 18 months ago, and now my thoughts are with Brian and his family as they go through this same journey. This is a sad time for all. I’ll be in Annandale next month. Time permitting, I’ll go to the hotel and raise a glass to the drink we never got to share in person. You will be missed, Lord Beari.

Brian and i have been close friends for many years now, yet we’ve never met. Would have loved to have had the opportunity to sit at my kitchen table here in Kentucky, and talked, and talked and talked. He’s always been there to answer my questions, he has more knowledge stored in his brain then anyone i’ve ever known. I hate to hear he won’t be here much longer. I know his feelings on this subject and i respect them, I wish him peace. I’ve always said I pray for him, and he’s say i was wasting my time. I’ll continue to pray. To his family I will say a prayer for you too. I hope you know how much his stories have kept all of us entertained. I hope you all have kept them. I’ve always ended my messages to him with Love ya, just something i say. Now i’ll say, Love ya like a father Brian, sleep well my friend.

  54. Beari, as you can see by all the comments on your site, you are loved and in everyone’s thoughts! I do hope you are being kept comfortable. Doesitevenmatter3 has been kind enough to keep me up to date on any news she gets about you and although I am not very good at expressing my own emotions, I think we’ve always had a connection and you understand.
My prayers are with you, my friend.

  55. Hi! I regret that I am late with this. Lovely to see you smiling! All the very best wishes. I appreciate the updates in these comments. My Lord Beari of Bow, you are a good friend, and you have brightened my life. Not trying to get sentimental here, but nobody else on WordPress (or elsewhere!) wants me, and your kindness has been light to me. You dear old curmudgeon, no reply needed, but I want you to take care. xx

  59. Hello DOD’s dear friends. It’s with great sadness that I am letting you all know that Lord Beari is now at peace. Dad passed last Tuesday (the 24th of September).
Please know that we read every one of your emails and messages to him which brought him much happiness and put a smile on his face through some very difficult times.
As you’d all know dad had hoped to make his final journey a trip to Wollongong however that wasn’t possible in the end – he wasn’t nearly fat enough to be accepted. Dad will be cremated and we are having a family memorial in the coming weeks. I will share a slide show we are putting together with you all soon.
In the meantime, if you fancy taking some time to remember dad I know he would love you to listen to Beethoven’s Missa solemnis. He’d be thrilled to think that was being played around the world for him. He also loved Beethoven s Ninth Symphony or Mozart’s Coronation March. If classical music is not your thing – he loved ol blues eyes – Frank Sinatra!
Thank you all for your emails sending love and support over the past couple of months.
Sending love and hugs back to you all
    Sarah

    3. I always felt I had met Brian in person, but then again I can see here in the comments that he made many others feel the same. That twinkle in his eyes and smile will shine on in us all with the very thought of your father. I know in my heart the Lord Beari of Bow will forever now live in peace.
My prayers are with you, Sarah.

  60. Sarah, know that Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony will be playing here in Denver and will forever remind me of your dad, his wonderful smile, and his love of his girls. (Beethoven’s always been one of my favorites too.) Hugs to you and all those Brian loved. He’ll be always in our hearts.

  63. I am so very very sad to read this announcement. My heart goes out to you Sarah and to your family. I’ve thought about Brian daily and will continue to so. He will be missed by all of us.

Brian had a fascinating and interesting life and reading about it gave us all a chuckle, I think a chunk of my day will be spent reading some of his old posts and remembering him with affection.
Good night and God bless, Brian. xx

  64. Dear Sarah
Thank you for keeping us informed about that lovable man. I do wish a lot of us could have met him in the flesh, it would have been an interesting session.
You know by now that he was well loved by those who didn’t even know him, and that he will certainly be missed. My love to you, your mother, the rest of the family, and to that pretty dog that Brian loved so much.

  66. Yesterday was a computer free day for me, so I am late in responding.
Oddly he was on my mind a lot last week – an article about Australian wines previously unseen appeared in a magazine during brushing off the dog hair on the coffee table. I looked at it and thought, Well, Beary Old Chap, must be you asking to raise a glass in tribute – tribute for saying salute to you for all that you are and mean to so many.
Friends are found at the strangest time in the most unusual places – I never met him face to face, but he was such a good friend – one who could laugh, share complaints – argue (with civility, such a rareness now) and ponder along with the wonders and mysteries and the absolute bonkerness of things.
He clearly loved all his family – and his girls. There’s a wealth of history and stories of his life in his blog – written with such style and humor. Hope those bring smiles for years to come. He was quite a guy. Hardly seems enough of a phrase for him. Adios, Brian. May peace and comfort wrap warmly around those two and four legged ones who feel his loss

I am so sorry for your loss, although your dad and i had never met, he meant very much to me. I had so much respect for him. Over the last maybe 15 yrs or more, he’d made me laugh so many times at some of the things he did or said. I always told him he was the smartest man i’d ever known, his love of books no doubt accounted for that. I know how much he loved his family. I am happy he’s at peace, but very sad he’s gone. I hope Kerry and the rest of the family can find comfort at this time. I will always remember his smile from all his pictures. He always seemed happy.
    With love and sorrow

  69. Dear Sarah, There is not much I can say that has not already been said. Your father’s loss will be keenly felt by many people around the world, who came to know, respect, and love, him without ever meeting him in the flesh, me included. I respect your decision to have a family memorial (as we did with my brother in similar circumstances). If that changes, and it becomes public, please know that it would be an honour for me to attend and to represent this community in person. (gwil7@optusnet.com.au)
In addition, I will be in Annandale on 12th November, so if you, or any of your family would like to meet, and raise a glass, I am happy to do so. My condolences to you and all the family. I feel for you deeply. xx Gwen Wilson (Wollongong).

  70. Blessings and comfort to you, Sarah, and the entire family. I’m so grateful to have known your father through WordPress. I’m also grateful to have been part of this community that has surrounded him for many years now. He was and still is an example of fortitude, courage and seeing the bright side of just about anything. I posted a little tribute to him this morning. It’s amazing how much his presence in my life shaped me as a writer and as an aging woman facing the ups and downs of coming nearer my own end. I love the photo of him in the hospital. I don’t think many people would be able to go through what he was going through and still come up smiling like a little elf about to do more mischief! Thanks for sharing him with us, especially in these last weeks.
