πŸ˜• It’s sure got me tossed! πŸ˜•

Those that pay attention to, and read, the ramblings on, what hopefully passes as intelligent rubbish, might well recall a recent post entitled;

Β CRASH! BANG! WALLOP!

wherein I described the horrors of a crash, not once, not twice, but thrice on this not so trusty Hewlett Packard heap of garbage masquerading as a computer.

For those just tuning in, that didn’t read that post, perhaps your time would be better spent watching a round of golf on the tele! πŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈ β›³οΈΒ Β πŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈ β›³οΈΒ Β πŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈ ⛳️

Once I had this thing up and running, after a fashion, I noticed that Microsoft, or some evil creature in their employ, had infiltrated and made changes to the operatingΒ  Windows 10 that was pre-loaded,

I assume it was an improved updated system – does that constitute an oxymoron or am I the moron? – because there were several changes which I did/do not like, and I’m not going to bore you with that now; I’ll save that for later!

One thing that’s particularly annoying is the programs that it planted on MY machine without MY approval, and that I can’t get rid of no matter how I try.

Not being the sharpest knife in the block, when it comes to photography, and fiddling around with the pictures. I’ve been lucky to have had the use of Picasa, a simple system for people like me.

I’d purchased a program which does everything except play ‘God Save The Queen’; but it’s way over my head, so I don’t bother with it. Picasa suits me fine.

Well it did;; until Google in their arrogance took it down; and I can’t get it back! It had a few thousand pictures which I could fiddle around with, and use sometimes ,to enhance one of my posts – says he modestly-

But not to worry, They’d all been saved in Google, well that’s what I’d been led to believe, all I had to do was go there and there they are; waiting! Guess what!

They ain’t there!!!

The photos are not really lost as I have them all on disks and most are backed up on the things that stuff gets backed up on, but it was very handy having Picasa; like me it was simple and easy to use, not that I’m easy to use mind you, I can be quite cussed at times I’ve been told.

But, since being blessed with this latest Windows 10, other changes have been made too. And not to my liking either.

How’s this for gall;Β  I would from time to time receive, emails from my daughter Emma with pictures attached, and like a lot of people these days the email closes with the words ‘sent from my iPhone’ or some such nonsense along those lines.

Naturally the first thing I’m going to do is open them, they’re going to be pictures of Ruby and Poppy May.

So I click on the download bit in the email, and what next? No picture just a message from Microsoft, to inform me, that these type of pictures cannot be downloaded, and I need to get an ap from the Microsoft store.

Off I trot to the Microsoft Store, and there is the ap that I need to open the pictures, click here and PAY!

Yes, if I want to download these pictures, I have to buy an ap from Microsoft for $1;88; or some such amount. I kid you not.

I assume that Mr gates is down to his last $50 billion, and as he must have been careless with what little he had, I decided not to help him out. Instead I downloaded the pictures from the War Office’s iPhone thingy,

For some reason I can’t do it with my Samsung Galaxy thingy, I’d switched so much stuff off that it barely works, except forΒ  operating as a mobile telephone.

As usual I’ve strayed way off course, and am probably now drifting by the New Hebrides, which is somewhere in the South Pacific as against the Sandwich Isles which are in the North Pacific; sort of; I had intended to keep this brief and explain what’s ‘got me tossed!’

Back to ‘ Once I had this thing up and running; I’d discovered that my Picasa was no more, and of course the bit in the start thing that says ‘Pictures’ was; and still is, quite empty; then I espied a little black box, with a couple of white mountain peaks inside, that says ‘Photos’.

‘ello, ‘ello thinks me, photos? What photos? A new one on me. So I clicks on the thing!

Bingo!

I’ve got pictures, hundreds of pictures, and they’re not all mine, many were taken by my daughters, when we were in America in 2008, that I have never seen, and many more taken here in Oz that I hadn’t seen either.

And I’ve no idea how they got here on my computer after it had crashed 3 times and I’m the only one who sits at this excuse …….

I set up a screen saver with photos and let it run see what was there, lazy mans way, and watched, and there are that many photos that I’ve never seen before so is it any wonder ……

That it’s got me tossed !/?

  1. Oh I can relate, Beari!! Recently my hard drive actually told me it was ready to crash – so – I desperately called the computer guy! He asked if I wanted it refurbished to Windows 10 and i nearly came out of my skin screaming Nooooo!! He said – “Good choice”. I will fight going to it at all costs. There are still things hiding, like you said, old pictures, but I’m gradually locating them.
    Best of luck, my friend!

  2. My PC has stopped doing all sorts of things, most annoying I cannot load an alternative browser. It is melting away slowly like an iceberg as functions splinter off and disappear. I am sure it is deliberate to get people to spend and upgrade and make us pay for things like MS Office. I’ll have to give in some time soon!

I did buy Office some years ago, and each time I got a new computer I installed it. now the disk has disappeared, I still have the box, and the code, but no disk, I sometimes think that Mr gates has spies and undercover agents who sneak in during the night and steal these things.
I’m using Libra, Disperser put me onto that and it’s quite good.people who started it used to be with oracle and were the designers of Open Office. Libra seems to be better

If you don’t have a free alternative to Microsoft office, I’m told that this free Office is excellent and is very hard to beat. It comes with the option of saving as a MS Word doc so that others can read it. https://www.libreoffice.org/

I purchased my Lenovo all-in-one at a discount from the small company that serviced our school machines. and when my old friend, my former IT engineer delivered it, it was all set up and ready to go and with some my favourites installed. 5. Google has discontinued Picassa. See https://picasa.google.com/
There’s a little app you can get for your phone called Google Opinion Rewards. Every day or two it will ask you a couple of survery questions, and answers reward you with small amounts, say 10 cents. Keep answering and over time you’ll build up a nice balance that can be spent at the Google Play Store for those miscellaneous little apps you want. My current balance is $52!
I certainly sympathize with your frustrations, however. Nothing annoys me faster than a computer that won’t cooperate or that has changed its ways without telling me.

  8. FYI, you can still load Picasa even if it’s no longer supported (or available) on Google. Just be careful where you get it from because many sites offer up versions with viruses. If you download one, makes sure you scan it with your virus checker (also, Malwarebytes).

If you had uploaded photos to Picasa on Google, those photos are still up in your account, only now they are on Google Photos. All the photos I had uploaded using Picasa are still there, including the albums I had created for sharing (like, for instance: https://photos.app.goo.gl/E2V3s5qaTDMJo4Vs5)

But, the Win10 Photo organizer is not bad.

I did, however, download a version of the old Windows movie editor because their new one sucks. Again, not available from Microsoft any longer but you can still find it (if you’re careful).

I typically use other photo organizers/viewers (the free one from Nikon and the one from Adobe β€” although the Adobe browser may only come with one of their products) but I like the Picasa photo viewer (but it doesn’t animate GIF files).

I think that Win10Photo thing must be what’s got all these pictures, most of which I don’t recognize, but obviously taken by one of the children when we were on holiday in the USA in 2008.

  10. I used to use Picasa. Then they killed it. I know how you feel. Now I use something called Image Capture which is nowhere near as good.
Also, on WordPress which is obviously trying to keep we two apart there is a thing called “the new block editor.” I opened it by mistake and it took me a whole day until I was told how to get the old one back. The new one looks very complicated. BUT WP told me it will soon change to the new editor system permanently.
    I am a bit miffed.

    1. Like I mentioned elsewhere, Picasa is still available for download and it will work in Windows 10 (can’t guarantee that it will keep working as they keep updating versions).

I have a copy from before 10.3MB and it’s version 3.8 from 2010. I don’t think I liked version 3.9 or I just didn’t download the full installation package. I could try e-mailing it if interested. I’d test the installer before sending it because I’ve not loaded it on the laptop (yet).

You can find Picasa on many sites online, but I would be very careful about downloading it from certain places (research the URL before downloading and when you do download, make sure your virus checker is up to speed).

However, Photos (included in Windows 10) does a reasonable job of quick edits. I’m not sure why you’d use Image Capture unless you’re using a Mac (the Windows Image Capture program I know is for screen captures)

Also, if you are shooting with Nikon, you can download their free software (ViewNX-i and CaptureNX-D) available for both iOS and Windows.

ViewNX can be used as a photo organizer and it will let you change the metafile (add keywords and stuff) as well as help you download files from the camera to your disk. It also lets you rename files and do quick edits.

Capture NX-D is a fairly powerful editor which makes use of control points and localized edit (ViewNX only changes global parameters). Both programs have YouTube videos (from users) explaining how to use them.

    2. The new editor sucks mostly because it’s different.

Think of “blocks” as groupings of paragraphs and galleries. I don’t see it as an advantage and I’m looking at Open Live Writer (used to be Windows Live Writer) as a workaround.

In chatting with the WP reps and reading the literature and forums, it should work. What is it, you ask?

It lets you compose and format your blog posts offline and you can them upload and publish them to your WordPress blog. I’ve not tried it yet because my life right now is chaotic, but I plan to in the next week or so because I will be without the Internet for some stretches of time and I want to compose posts offline and then post them when I’m online.

      Search for “openlivewriter.org” if interested.

        Liked by 1 person

    3. Also, I plan to give the new editor a chance on a separate blog (one that is not public and specifically created to try things out). Like anything else, I assume mastery comes with practice but I don’t want to practice on my live blog.

Again, this is down the line. The first order of business for me is to try Open Live Writer. However, there’s an advantage to mastering the code that comes with the service. In theory, it should offer up fewer bumps along the road to becoming a famous blog.

YouTube has videos for both Open Live Writer and for the new (Gutenberg) WordPress Editor that give a decent overview and should get new users a head start . . . if they want to learn. If they just want to piss and moan, there are other (free) blogging platforms out there.

Me? If I get annoyed enough, I’ll move to my own website on my own domain. It would give me total control . . . and total responsibility for any headaches related to maintaining a site. Needless to say, I’m not rushing outa here yet.

I’ve received notification from WP that in another couple of weeks they are going to debit my account automatically for whatever it is I have, trouble is they haven’t got the right card details.
I lent my card to my son and he lost the card so I had to get a new one, different number. So they’ll start nagging me, then I’ll find out if I can keep the current system if not then I wont bother paying them for something I don’t like or want.
