Disaster struck!!!

I’ve just acknowledged a comment on a previous post, that reminded me of an old expression; “confession is good for the soul”; which is all well and good for my three billys, brought up in the true faith, by yours very truly 😈 but a waste of time for me, as I’m sure that regular readers would all agree! And I trust all my readers are regular, I can’t think of anything worse than….. 😌 😏 😌 😏  😌

Yesterday, being Saturday, the 1st September and officially the first day of  Spring here in Australia, – it was thought to be too difficult, for the average convict 🕱🕱 to work the seasons by the sun, even though they’d been doing it for yonks, long before transportation to their new ‘homeland’; – I decided that I’d be nice for a change, and make the War Office a “Pea & Ham Soup”; mind you, she had dropped the hint a few days earlier, by buying a couple of really beautiful, smoked, ham hocks; plus some split peas.

How could I not make what happens to be my favourite, cold weather, soup of choice?  🍲🍲🍲🍲

Today, being the first Sunday in September, – (here in Oz it’s fathers day; yes, we celebrate fathers day here, approximately nine months before mothers day, in the following May. Logical in a way I suppose) – I decided I’d make something special for me.

Well no one else is, are they?

As I’d made a pot of soup, big enough  to last two/three days at least. I thought how nice it’d be, to have some croutons with mine. I do like them with pea & ham soup, the War Office doesn’t! So make them I did!

Just a couple of dozen, that’s all. When last I checked them, they needed just another minute or so,, as they needed turning.

I don’t know what happened to cause the distraction, but I was in my bedroom doing I forgot what, when I heard what almost amounted for to scream, from the War Office; and she’s the last person in the world I’d expect to scream; so dashing to her aid, at  top speed, sort of, to see what was amiss, there she was, in my smoked filled kitchen, oven door open, and the smoke pouring out,🔥🔥🔥 and the smoke alarm system, making the most horrendous noise imaginable.

My croutons were no more! 😭😭😭😭😭

I do believe she was delighted; once the smoke was gone, all doors, windows, wide open, it didn’t take that long to clear the smoke, leaving just the ashes; she dashed off, got her mobile/cell phone, and took a picture, or maybe more, of my croutons and sent it off to daughter one, daughter two and son. My son’s instant reply was to dig out the Weber and fire it up, seems he uses charcoal in a Weber! 👿

Nuff said!

,

Zeus the Thunderer was well pleased!

I might mention here, that the War Office did not take a photo of the bacon and egg breakfast that I’d prepared, and served her, on this Fathers Day” which I suppose is okay, I’m not her father, and send that off to our three big billys!

  1. Oh, my! 😮 Other than the blackened croutons, I hope it was a very Happy Father’s Day!!! 🙂 🐻 🙂
Come to think of it…your croutons might go well with blackened fish! 😛
I love that The War Office had so much fun with your disaster! 😀
Know what? Some people use the smoke alarm as a food timer to tell when the food is done! Ha! 😛 😈 😀 o_O  😀 😎
Your soup sounds so lovely and delicious!
Did the smoke alarm scare Coco?
    HUGS!!!
    PS…I’ll confess…the photo of your croutons made me snort-laugh…loudly! 😀 😛

    1. Yes, it was thank you Carolyn, I was ignored by everyone, except for a lovely phone call from Ruby and Poppy May, which made my day. 😁 🐶🐾 🐻😅🍻🍺 🍸🍸 😊😵
The soup was one of the best I’ve made, I know that’s true as the War Office told me 😊 😅 😵😇 😵
No nothing scares Coco 🐶 🐾 🐩he’s a brave fellow just like his daddy 😁😈😊 😅
      I must admit I didn’t laugh, snort. I was devastated 😩😞😩😞

      1. Aw, I bet you were. 😦 Did you try to make some more croutons?!

Cooper is afraid of our smoke alarm when, on a rare occasion, it goes off. So he goes outside to get away from it.

YAY for Ruby 😇 and Poppy May 😇 !!!

    1. Strangest thing I ever saw, never knew she had a sense of humour, but on second thought she married me. Glad you enjoyed my suffering 😈
Fathers day went very well, no attention whatsoever, except a phone call from my granddaughters 😀

      1. Strange how mothers get more attention, on second thoughts, our offspring know we would make more fuss if we didn’t have the required attention!

Pea and Ham Soup – Yuuuuummmm – with or without croutons – Yuuummmmmmm.
“use the smoke alarm as a food timer”, is the best and most sensible household hint I’ve ever heard.

  5. I sincerely dislike the sound of the smoke alarm, so in no way do I allow smoke to get to it!! But I have to admit, you now have me in the mood to make a big batch of pea soup (extra ham hocks of course!!)

    1. It’s the first time I’ve heard one go off GP, I was wondering what the hell the noise was until the War Office told me.
As for an extra hock I’m glad I didn’t throw the second one in, the first one was the best meatiest ham hock I’ve ever come across a real beauty.

  6. Oh dear, those croutons are rather well done, aren’t they? But to me the disaster would be the smoke alarm. I don’t know which I hate more, those alarms or the thought of an actual fire. I’ve three alarms in my little house, and the one nearest the kitchen is, admittedly, unplugged.

    1. Yes, I suppose you could put it like that 😦
As for the smoke alarms it’s the first time I’d ever heard them, well the WO is happy now, she knows they work 😈

  7. Countries have Father’s Day on lots of different dates. I have come to the conclusion that this is a trick devised by greeting card manufacturers to ensure year round sales.
Nothing wrong with those croutons that a bit of scraping won’t put right!

  8. It sounds like you’re in good shape, Brian! I rather enjoyed the ‘burnt offering’ photo! 🙂 That plus yet another confession from you makes me wonder about you…. Count me as another split pea soup fan. I just made a huge pot full of it–minus the ham hock, not allowed on my diet 😦 . Instead, it’s got sweet potatoes, apples, celery, onion and peppermint to spice it up! Yum yum food. Don’t knock it until you try it. 🙂

    1. I must try sweet potato next time, I use onion and garlic, celery and carrot, never thought of peppermint, can’t say I’ve ever thought of peppermint. Might give it some thought now. This ham hock was the meatiest I’ve ever come across, beautiful. Love it! 😀

  11. There is nothing so terrifying when the smoke alarm screams, especially in my little flat.
I don’t seem to get notifications from WP when you post something these days. It was OK back in the days when you visited me but now I only find out when you make a comment on Elouise’s or Gwendoline’s blog. But at least I find out that you are still alive.

    1. You could check your subscription settings and make sure you’re both still subscribed to the blog and also set up to receive notifications.

The reason I suggest that is that it’s rarely the originating blog that’s at fault. people can accidentally change subscription options. For instance, clicking on an e-mail notification option to unsubscribe from the blog when you just meant to unsubscribe from the comments.

To see who you follow, go to the Reader (Dashboard, click on Reader) then on the left bar you should see an option for Followed Sites and the box “Manage”. That’s where you can check the subscription. If ElBob doesn’t show up, you need to subscribe again. If he does show up, check the notification options.

      Here’s a useful reference . . .

      1. Thank you. There is an alternate reason and that is just that someone might just stop following because he/she has got annoyed or bored and therefore can’t be bothered and someone told me there is also somewhere that you can click and they don’t ever get any of your comments, posts or likes.
But thanks. I will look into it.

        1. Boy, that would have to be some kind of jerk, I tell you what . . . but, I just don’t see ElBob as that kind of person.

Besides, him unsubscribing from your blog doesn’t affect you getting notices for his blog.

Say someone — for example, say ElBob — unsubscribes from your blog and any comments on your blog.

What that would mean is that person — for example, say ElBob — wouldn’t receive any notices regarding either posts or comments on your blog.

However, that wouldn’t change your ability to see his blog posts and his comments if — in fact — you were subscribed to his blog and comments.

Him unsubscribing from your blog has no effect whatsoever on what you see or can’t see or notices you get or don’t get.

Ergo, I’m guessing you’re either unsubscribed from ElBob’s blog or have turned off the notifications. Seeing as you’re complaining about it, I presume that if it has happened, it was by a mistake on your part.

As I recall, neither you nor ElBob could work out a simple advertisement for brown rice cups so I’m not surprised one or both of you would inadvertently screw something up without any malice or mischief intended from either of you.

          Just sayin’ . . . it’s a possibility.

      2. I just got to read this, after much difficulty I managed to find that Reader bit and John’s name is there listed as one of the 23 that I follow, I still haven’t seen or heard anything from him except in the comments section where for some reason his comments have to be approved, as I found out today when I happened to have some sort of bar opened down the left side of the screen,
Thanks for confusing me, I shall now have to have a stiff drink to steady me down.

  12. Hello, Lord Beari. Well, that does sound dramatic. Nothing like a bit of excitement to add spice to cooking. I have long cooked “milestone” meals for myself, and, as you have learned, that takes nothing away from the enjoyment of it. I am just glad Coco came out unscathed, unless I missed something. Next time, keep a fire extinguisher handy.

    1. Hello Pamela; I’m sorry it’s taken so long to acknowledge you and your comment, I’ve been a bit poorly.
These disasters are very rare when I’m in the kitchen, that’s why the War Office scooted off and with much merriment sent the picture to her children; they’re ALWAYS her children, and Coco watches everything I do when I’m in the kitchen and is prepared for instant evacuation

  13. Oh my! I hate those alarms.
What a loud – not exactly cheery – celebration for your Father’s Day (hmmm spreading out the date of that may likely be a profit decision as one of your commenter’s mentioned 😮
Your sound sound delicious (even if the weather is rather warm and sticky here, it’s been raining for days and soup does sound nice with the grey skies)
Maybe the coutons could work as adobe blocks for a frog house? Or patio pavers….
My mom would have scraped them off and we’d be too scared to say anything about it…no wasting food at our house….char must have some minerals…I’m sure she gave us the scientific make-up and benefits of charred foods. She really didn’t like cooking much.
    Salute to Coco!

    1. hello Phil. I’m sorry for the late acknowledgement of your kind comment;I must admit that when the alarm went off I hardly noticed it, in fact wondered what it was, in 40 + years of marriage and slaving away in the kitchen, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard the thing, which caused the War Office a great deal of joy, hence the picture.; which did the rounds of the relatives.
The soup was great but I would have loved my croutons 😦
My mother never bothered to scrape the burnt toast, she told us that the carbon in the toast would make us very strong and that boxers trained upon it.; and when you consider that we never ever had butter (or margarine come to that) you can imagine how vile it was, Burnt toast with home made jam . My mother was a lousy cook; my dad was pretty good though.
