Disaster struck!

If that didn’t attract your attention; nothing will!

Late last week I decided to make some cakes. I’m not very fond of the cakes or buns, from the local bakery/ies, or stuff that  supermarkets try to pass off as cakes. The bakery cakes, have a likeness about them which I find uninteresting, they all appear to have the same texture, and, except for the chocolate cakes, they all taste petty much the same.

The supermarket stuff is just a gluggy mess of flour, flavouring and who knows what else, shoved into ovens and ‘cooked’ packaged and flogged! Packet cake mixes are not much better!

So if you want a decent cake you have to cook it yourself! And I felt like some cakes!

The War Office suggested some friands, as you know, when the W.O.  suggests something,

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA
Friand’s

I take it as a direct order. some will recall I made some a few months back, that’s them over there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Those hardly souls, and keen followers, of my codswallop all know that I don’t have/keep or use recipes as such. I do have a few notes, or lists, of ingredients, weight and or quantity of stuff for various things but no actual recipes. Although I have got one now, I might bore you with how and why  later.

Now the only thing I know for certain, is that when baking/making friands, I use the white of five eggs. The yolks go in a rice pudding, sometimes.

Disaster strikes! I could not find my list of the rest of the stuff, and there’s plenty, I must have thrown it out, along with, I have no idea, what else, when I was clearing out loads of what I’d thought was rubbish a few weeks back.

The War Office to the rescue,”go on line get the recipe there” says she; right says me, and off I trot; trouble is I didn’t get my original recipe from the internet, I probably got it, from  womans magazine, somewhere, years ago.

You type ‘Friand ‘ recipes in Google and you’ll get over 90 thousand ‘hits’ for ’em; I know all the ingredients, and there’s enough of them. I know what to do when I’ve got them, trouble is, I can never remember the exact quantities, ‘cept for the eggs, and that’s the main thing.

The right quantity.

I knew I’d  recognize it if I saw it, but after half hour or so, of frustrating browsing, I’d come across one recipe that was similar, trouble was instead of giving weight they gave quantities, by cups can you believe?

Bing a stout fellow (well not physically anymore), heart of oak, becoming a Pom in Australia I took a punt, and had a bash. Naturally I popped in the raspberries, the War Office likes raspberries in her friands.

They turned out okay.

Three weeks or so later……..

Thought I might as well finish this ‘draft; is it still a draft now that I’m finishing it? Who knows? I’m sure my mentor, and tutor, will have words of wisdom to put my worries to rest and comfort me.

About a week or so after the last had been devoured, I was still agitated by the loss of my original ‘recipe’; and I awoke around 3 am with a start; I’d written the complete recipe, sort of, for my daughter Sarah a few years previous and printed it out. Did I have a copy tucked away on a backup disk?

There was no way I was going to boot up at that time of the morning, so I took the unusual step of writing myself a note. I have a thing about writing notes. I don’t!

It must have been a Tuesday morning as I was home alone; except for my faithful friend Coco.WP_20150507_003

Before booting up for the day I rummaged around my backup drives, selected the one with the most dust on and hooked it up.   It’s still hooked.                                                      Third from the bottom – Recipes!Toshie1

I now have an actual recipe, from which to work, so tomorrow or the next day I might just go ahead and make a fresh batch.

I wonder how they’ll turn out?

    1. I was more than surprised, I was flabbergasted. Fancy waking up in the middle of the night over something so ridiculous as a lost recipe, I’m going round the twist Andrew 😀

  2. Whew! Good save. (much better than carefully paging through the stack of now deteriorating news paper clippings, pages from mom’s old cookbook, and post-it note recipes…maybe time with a scanner is needed)

    1. I really should do it more often, makes it a lot easier, I have bits and pieces of paper scattered with ingredients and half the time I wonder what they’re for,
Think with my stuff I’d need a lot more than a scanner, might need the boffins at Bletchley park to decipher it for me.
If you enjoy a sweet cake you might like to give it a whirl Phil 😀

  3. I confess I’d never heard of friands, or briands, but they look and sound delicious.

    1. Though it sounds French, they are an Australian cake, been made here for many years, I have no idea who devised them in the first place but they are absolutely delicious, wonder they haven’t caught on around the world. You wont find a coffee shop in Australia that doesn’t sell friands, well in most major cities. They slug about $4 or $5 a time,
A lot of messing about making them, but well worth the effort.
I prefer them without the raspberries/blueberries/strawberries
I’m going to make a batch this week, not telling the War Office but I’ve always fancied coconut thrown in the mixture, and am going to give it a burl

  4. Well, look at you! Using backups and stuff. I guess you’re getting the hang of that Win10 after all.

    Nice photo of the boat.

    1. 25 words! A first! I’m stunned It has nothing to do with Win10,. I wrote this out in April 2011, those were the days before the stroke and when I still had a stomach and was almost a one off, I noticed another recipe in that folder.
I usually do back my stuff up but haven’t a clue as to why I do it. Lucky I did in this case.

And the boat was just for you, wasn’t that nice of me? 😀

    1. Yes, well I don’t plan to make a habit off it;

I did write out another recipe a few weeks back at the request of GG from the ‘Gong, don’t know if she ever prepared it though, she never got back to me, I think she’s still going strong, hate to have THAT on my conscience

So thats 2 recipes I’ve got written,

      1. I have to fall on my sword and confess I have not yet made it – but your email is still in my in-basket with a “follow up” flag attached. Never enough hours in the day . . . It does look yummy and will definitely be made at some point.
(Hubbie does most of the cooking, and most of mine lately has been soft stuff for my brother eg zucchini slice, pork and veal bite-size meatballs, etc, etc, etc. Unfortunately, he’s progressed past the eating stage . . . :(- )

        1. It’s pretty hot here, likely for the next few days too, so the WO suggested I make an extra large bowl of it today, which I did, she told our son, and he’s been by and scoffed half of it, not making anymore ’til summer. :D.

        3. Coles seem to have them year round, They have a miniature Savoy which is absolutely perfect for the task, never more than $3 each,
I’m not sure about Woolworths never checked them out for the cabbage I’ve always been happy with Coles, which is something, they need to be good for somethings I suppose. 😛

      1. I am sure you don’t mean ‘to late GP.’ because GP is obviously still with us. Maybe you meant to write, “too late, GP.” There you go. That is a great example how to totally ignore the post that has been laboured over and instead to pick on a tiny little error in the writing!

        1. Not sure what you men John, I didn’t totally labour over this post, if that’s what you mean, I put it away until I was in a mood to finish it.
It’s hard at times being autodidactic, leaving out commas and things and being a bit thick, I do the best I can and struggle along 😀

    1. It certainly is a delightful cake, it’s perfect for the Australian and English palate I’m curious as to how the American palate will take to it..
Was extremely tired this morning but I’ve bucked up and come good now.
I too have a birthday coming up next week and my chum Neill (you may have read some of his comments) has his tomorrow, we will be have a few birthday drinks Sunday week at the Vic 😀

      1. Well, well… I didn’t know you had replied. Yes, Neill sounds a good mate and a good fellow. May I ask what day your birthday is on? I’m glad you’re feeling better. Oh, and yanks like things very sweet–sickeningly so sometimes. I’m not of the palate. I do like Bakewell Tarts. I’ve had them in England–in Bakewell, in fact. I make a good one, also, crust and everything, except I don’t make the raspberry jam–yet.

        1. My actual birthday was on a Wednesday, in 1935; which is the reason I’m so full of woe, this year the anniversary falls on a Tuesday, which would have been a nicer day to have been born on , but then again that would have been the 16th, and I much prefer the number 17 😀
Neill is a good fellow and would have made a good priest had he have gone the full distance, he has a good heart .
I can’t remember ever having Bakewell tarts, in fact I can’t recall ever having much to eat when I lived in England. During and after the war everything was rationed severely; much more than Americans and Australians can know or understand, what they endured was nothing compared to what we, and Europe in general had to bear.
Do you knowl I’ve never ever given thought to making jam, my mother used to, one of the very few things she could make, she was a lousy, lazy, incompetent cook.; so it really didn’t bother her the rationing, gave her all he excuses she wanted.

        2. No, yanks have no idea of the hardships other nations endured, nor is the us interested. It is a culture that simply does not care. A constant stream of events backs this statement up. 17 April–good to know. Well, I am glad you have a fully stocked kitchen now and are able to make lovely cakes whenever you want. I may attempt to make myself a Bakewell Tart for my anniversary day. We shall see.

  13. Happy bday tomorrow, Brian! Alas, I cannot eat sweet things like this. Also, I’ve never been a fan of super-sweet food. Probably because we didn’t have many sweets growing up. Oatmeal cookies with raisins and the occasional homemade cake was plenty of fun. But no pastries or super-sweet stuff such as I saw but didn’t eat when I lived in Germany. Your recipe looks fabulous. My eyes love it; my tummy/gut won’t. 😦
