Many, many moons ago, I started a post on a subject of great interest to me and this map tells the story. The part that it doesn’t tell is what intrigues me the most
I wonder how many know what I’m raving on about this time, and come to that, are remotely interested!

Looks like a commercial cruise around the world. Or, perhaps, a solo sail around the world. Or, one of them there explorer types going around the world . . . except they hit Los Angeles and Seattle, and those are both ports for cruise lines. Also, cruise ships usually reposition with the seasons.
Wait! . . . the flight of an albatross following a ship around the world.

Well, I did not guess the exact mission, but I was close in thinking it was a “stunt” of some sort.
The problem with the Internet is that one must resist the impulse to “right-click” on an image and click on “Search Google for Image”.

I don’t know if that’s what she did. I resisted doing that, but guessed ships because of the Suez Canal and the port of calls.
Once you said ‘nope’, I did 0.5 seconds search.
And, it’s not being lazy. I could have sat here for many hours without thinking of the particular event. I call that ‘convenience’.

Actually the public lavatories were referrd to as public conveniences for the simple reason that they were stratigically placed for the publics convenience, which does indicate that they always knew what they were saying even if lesser mortals and souls on this earth did not quite comprehend 😈

I think its a ship ‘cos it goes through the Suez Canal. So it can’t be more than a 100 odd years old. And I won’t do the right click thingo. And it can’t be a huge US aircraft carrier for the same reason – the canal.

Actually John it may well be over 100 years ago, the Suez canal opened in November 1869, and warships including battleships have passed through this canal. The USS Guam went through during the Gulf war but she is not one of the larger types under 20000 tons I think.
The worlds largest container ship the “MAERSK MC-KINNEY MOLLER” at 400 metres and nearly 195000 tons passed through without problems.

No I’ll wait. But I had a thought that it must be a ship thing and a world tour and because it stopped in a few extra place in the US it might be a showing off of an American ship or two.

Pink maps always make me think of those blessed wall maps in primary school marking out the British Empire, still hanging, twenty years after WWII reshaped its influence. But I am guessing the black lines mark out all your sea voyages, Magellan 😀

Hmmm, well, if it was a round-the-world sailing adventure I’d expect to see a route using the Roaring Forties. So I’ll watch and wait. By the way, I worked for NYK before “retiring”, and some of the photos of our vessels going through the Panama Canal showed a very tight fit. So the Suez must be must wider, but I can’t seem to find detail on that.

This site is by a fellow who has just done his PhD in some area of British Naval History.

He seems a newcomer to Bitish Naval History, perhaps I should have done a PhD on this subject I’ve been an ardent follower of things navy these last 65 years. I was once mistaken as a “retired professor of history” by a large group of visitors to the ANMM when I was an active guide there, the post that I am writing/editing would make a great thesis, I’m in two minds as to whether to publish the post when I’m finished. It’s all completely original and is more than likely to cause a stir. I’ll probably be touching up on the subject in a follow up post on the GWF.
It stikes me as strange that nobody has questioned what it is that intrigues me re the GWF. especially from my Yankee chums and followers
