Plugging the gurgler

Some months ago I wrote expressing my concern regarding the way Australia would be heading under the Liberal Government run and owned by Murdock, Rinehart et al with the weak featherweight politician Tony Abbot Esq as their front man/puppet.
I
t hasn’t taken them long, they’re dead set about using The Great Barrier Reef as a toxic dumping ground, no matter that it’s one of the great wonders of the natural world, and naturally they have our Medicare system in their sights.
Well seems we’re not going to take it lying down, the fighting groups are up and ready and will not let these greedy, selfish, money hungry parasites send us sluicing down the gurgler.
The  organizations such as GetUp and the unions are armed and ready for the fight, I know they have the courage and the will to win, that will never be, in doubt lets hope their fellow Australians are similarly committed.

Subject: REEF NEWS: We’re taking this to court

“This is nothing short of miraculous. We are overwhelmed by the determination of GetUp supporters!” – Environmental Defenders’ Office (EDO) Queensland Solicitor Jo Bragg.

BRIAN,

They must have assumed they’d had the final word.

When Environment Minister Greg Hunt and the Marine Park Authority approved dumping of five million tonnes of seabed inside Reef waters, it was supposed to be campaign over. Vested interests had won, and our Reef would be sold out for short-term profits.

Instead, something incredible happened. You and thousands of other GetUp members put your own money forward to launch a citizens’ Reef Fighting Fund. We’ve never seen anything quite like it.

All up, more than 16,000 people have donated so EDO Queensland and North Queensland Conservation Council can take this fight to the courts. In fact, you’re one of 8,000 people who’ve donated to GetUp for the first time ever to fund this legal fight. Thanks to your generosity, we’re contributing $130,000 to the legal case right off the bat – $50,000 more than our original target! You’ve also ensured we have the resources to fund a strong ongoing campaign that won’t shy away from other hard-hitting legal, legislative and corporate tactics.

Thank you.

We all know how prolonged and expensive legal fights can be. To their enormous credit, EDO Queensland and North Queensland Conservation Council had been prepared to pull together a case on a barebones budget. Now, thanks to you and other GetUp members, it’s a very different story.

“Now there is money for expert witnesses, court transcripts, barristers’ fees and transport costs. We can be bigger, better and more ambitious with the court case to protect the Reef. This is nothing short of miraculous. We are overwhelmed by the determination of GetUp supporters!” – Jo Bragg, EDO Queensland Solicitor.

No matter what happens in court, we’ve sent a very uncomfortable ripple through the legions of power and the vested interests used to getting their way. Thousands of everyday Australians are making it possible to go toe-to-toe with big mining, and together we will do everything in our power to protect our Reef.

There’s so much further to go with this campaign, so we’ll be in touch soon. But now, for everything, thank you.

Tony Abbott and his star candidate expected to win the Griffith by-election on the weekend. They didn’t. The result was a repudiation of their negative agenda – and their plan to end Medicare bulk-billing.

As a community we raised enough to deploy mobile billboards in the crucial final three days before Election Day. Thanks to your help, the first blow has been struck in the battle to save Medicare.

Medicare was one of the top issues during the election campaign. The government’s loss should be a clear sign that their un-mandated plan to slug people to see a doctor is not supported by voters. Whether this message is received by such a dogmatic and ideological government remains to be seen.

Rest assured that we will be keeping an eagle eye on the government’s plans for Medicare, and we will always be ready to fight to protect it.

Thanks again for your support in this campaign. As a community we made a real impact.

In union,

Australian Unions Team
